On your sport...
How long have you played? What inspired you to play?
I’ve been playing basketball since I was in the third grade. When I realized that I was so much taller than everyone else I went to school with, I decided to give it a try, and it happened to work out pretty well.
Where is your favorite place to play (compete)?
Since I’ve been in college, I think that my favorite place to play would be the Charleston Civic Center. That’s where the Conference Tournament is held every year, and there are always a lot more people that come watch for the tournament than most of the regular season games.
What is your favorite number? Why?
My favorite number would probably be 32. No particular reason, it’s just been the number that I’ve stuck with basically throughout my entire playing career.
Who is the best player you’ve played WITH and AGAINST?
WITH – I would have to say the best player that I have played with is Romeo Travis (Professional Basbetball player in Tübingen, Germany). I played with him on a summer league this past summer and he really helped me to develop new parts to my game, as well as keep me focused and confident in the skills that I already have.
AGAINST – The best player I have played against would probably be Terrell Eargle (Alderson-Broaddus). Game in and game out, Terrell is always filling up the stat sheet, having numerous games that come dangerously close to him having a triple-double.
Do you have a pre-game ritual? If so, what is it?
I don’t really think of it as a ritual, but I generally like to just throw my headphones on and relax a little bit. As game time comes closer and closer, I tend to listen to more upbeat music to get me pumped up, focused, and ready to play. Finally, when it’s time to play ball, I just try to go out and have fun.
If you didn’t play your sport, what sport would you play?
Probably football, some people say that I would be a pretty good wide out, if I put on some more weight.
What is the worst experienced you’ve had? What did you learn from it?
This would have to be from my first year down at college. We had a really good team that year, which made it to the NCAA tournament for the first time in school history. It was a great experience, however, we lost the first round game by 3 in OT. Sitting on the bench knowing that I couldn’t contribute anything due to my redshirt drove me nuts. One of the things I learned from this was that I want to get back to that level so bad, It’s been my motivation ever since.
Have you ever had an injury while performing your sport?
Yes, 2 years ago I tore my MCL, when it happened I didn’t know what to expect, the only thing I could think about was if I would be able to play again. Luckily, I recovered and everything is better.
What do you consider as your greatest accomplishment?
I think one of the greatest accomplishments I have achieved would be averaging a double-double in high school. I never really worried about stats through my career, I was more concerned with winning, so to be able to win, as well as put up numbers was a major plus.
What is your most memorable moment? Why?
One of the most memorable moments I have is a few years ago when our team was ranked as high as 6th in the country. This is such a great achievement for any team, and it just felt good to know that I was a part of one of the most successful programs in the country.
As of today, you’re team is 19-1, #1 in your region, and ranked #20 in the country.. What do you think has been some key factors leading into your teams success this season?
I think it’s the fact that everyone on our team has good guard skills, and no one on our team is selfish with the ball. We are always making the extra pass to get open looks, and we drain em’.
How has your sport helped you become who you are today?
Through playing basketball, it has helped me learn many skills that will help me throughout my life. Some of them include discipline, patience, as well as many others. By learning these skills, it has helped me to not only become a better person, but also a better basketball player.
How has your family reacted to all of your sporting success?
I feel that they have reacted well. They have always stood by me through the good times and the bad times. They are very proud of the things that I have accomplished.
Behind your sport...
What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
Hanging out with friends, playing video games, working on my game.
Name 3 Fun Facts about yourself that people may not know.
(1) I am a true computer nerd. (2) I rock out while driving; including singing (3) I have 2 tattoos on my back.
Do you have a pet peeve? If so, what is it?
Yes, one of my biggest pet peeves is, I hate when people act different when they are around certain people and completely different with others, just be yourself and what's meant to be will be.
Facebook or Twitter?
Ps3, Xbox or neither?
Depends, sports game definitely PS3, almost anything else XBOX
What is your favorite part about college?
This has to be the free time I get from not having to go to class all day. It gives me some time on my own and it allows me to go down to the gym from time to time and work on my skills.
What is your favorite quote?
“I never said it would be easy, I only said it would be worth it.” I like this quote because it sums up an athlete’s life. Putting in the work for your sport is never an easy process, however, when all is said and done, the more work you put in, the bigger and better the reward will be.
Who is the most influential person you’ve met? Why?
My grandma, no matter what my situation is, she is always praying for me that I do well, and she always believes in me that I can achieve whatever I put my mind to.
What do you value the most?
My life, without it, I wouldn’t be where I am today.
What is your major? Why did you choose it?
Business Information. I chose it because I’ve always been good with computers, so I figured it would be a good choice for me.
Outside of your sport, what are your visions/goals in life?
To sum it up in 2 words, “Be Successful”.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
5 years from now, I am hoping to still be playing basketball somewhere. Whether it is somewhere in this country, or possibly in another country overseas, I’m just hoping to be able to say, “I made it.”
Final thoughts...
How do you feel about being the Dorm Rumor?
I am honored to be selected. There are many other outstanding athletes that I have either played with or against, and to be selected as a feature for the magazine gives me a humbling feeling.
What are your thoughts about Mylan Murphy?
I admire him to the fullest. Everything he does, he does for a reason. He arguably has one of the most hectic schedules, including sports, school, his clothing line, etc, and he is still able to be successful. Not very many people can do the things that he does and still be sane. I don’t know how he does it, but I have the utmost respect for him because of all the things he is involved with.
What advice do you have to anyone reading your story?
No matter what sport you play, if you can stay focused on your goals that you set for yourself, you can achieve almost anything.
What will you continue to Strive4?
Success in any and everything I do.
